We came across this big black Mack at the recently held Trucking for Hawke's Bay Child Cancer event. With a lot of top trucks now working for large logistic companies it was refreshing to see a truck painted in sharp black and with an impressive setup behind the cab we decided this was one truck we wanted to feature.
We caught up with driver Steve to get these photos and asked owner Paul a few questions about the Black Mack.
XT: Who owns the truck and who are the drivers?
Paul: Steve Green is the driver and I own the truck (Paul Hammond).
XT: What year is the truck, the specs and the history of it?
Paul: It's a 1992 MH with a Mack E9 500hp V8 engine, 18 speed Mack gearbox, Mack diffs. As far as I know it's been a logger all its life, with two previous owners, first from Richmond, Nelson the second from Whangarei.
XT: Who is responsible for the impressive setup behind the cab?
Paul: I made the stacks myself from 6" Stainless Steel tube, just ideas from other trucks I've seen around.
XT: Where and What does the truck normally haul?
Paul: We mainly transport 40ft containers of apples for Edenz Ltd (a Coolstore in Havelock Nth) and Hamburg Sud
75% of what we transport goes to the port of Napier, the rest to ports of Tauranga and Auckland.
XT: Are there any future plans for the truck?
Paul: Just to keep adding shiny bits to it.
Thanks to Paul and Steve for their time and allowing us to feature a very cool Black Mack.
