Once a logger of the Horowhenua region, this 1990 Western Star 4964 known as 'The Burglar' is now a converted tractor unit proudly owned by Dean Fitzgerald of Pahiatua.
Powered by a Detroit series 60 425hp engine the big star is Dean's hobby truck and is used to help raise money for numerous charitable causes especially for Child Cancer supported events. Since going on the road a little more than 6 months ago the truck has appeared at a number of shows including the recent Wellington show and the Spring South Island Classic Run.
The truck has been a work in progress for Dean and has spent the best part of 2 years in his workshop. During that time Dean has spent countless hours on his project and did a large part of the 'behind the scenes' work.
The 76" sleeper is from a US imported 2001 Constellation model and has been modified to accommodate the difference in dimensions of the narrower Heritage model. Jackson Enterprises of Pahiatua built the frame for the sleeper and also fitted the stainless, guards and the turntable. Other eXtras include the rear light bar and bumper which was supplied by Truck Centre of Mount Maunganui. Total truck spray of Palmerston North did the paint work while Capture Signs did the signs and scroll work.
Although 'The Burglar' is no longer a working unit, because of it's unique presentation and dedication to such charitable organisations as the Child Cancer Foundation, Dean's project is more than worthy of this month's feature. Big thanks to Dean for his time and effort in preparing his outstanding Western Star.
